Sierra Leone 2000

"Operation Palliser"

The Sierra Leone conflict has its roots in the unstable peace in Africa and its independence from Great Britain in 1961. Since independence, the country has been in chaos. In 1992, an 8 year civil war began with the takeover of the Sierra Leonean  government. Small attempts were made to restore the original form of government, yet they all failed. Finally in July 1999, a ceasefire was put into effect and a treaty was signed. The UK was sent to Sierra Leone in May to evacuate its citizens and ensure the release of the UN peacekeepers. Many Sierra Leoneans thought that this would be the end of the brutal 8 year civil war, and they may be right.
