Operation Desert Fox

December 16-19, 1998

On 28 February 1991, the Persian Gulf War ended leaving Iraq facing UN sanctions and even continuous weapon inspections. The United Nations sent weapon inspectors to Iraq after the Gulf War to ensure that Iraq would not break the cease-fire agreement signed after the war. However in October 1998, Iraq claimed that it has ceased all cooperation with the inspectors and they would not allow them to inspect sites that were suspected to be housing dangerous weapons. As a result, the UN pulled out all inspectors and UN personnel from Iraq and air strikes began on 16 December 1998.
